Five years ago, if someone told me that I would start my own beauty line I would have politely responded, "You have the wrong girl." Truth is, I have always considered myself somewhat of a tomboy. My days start with the simple routine of tending to our animals. My free time is spent horseback riding, running, or paddle boarding. Life on the farm has taught me the value of self-reliance, resourcefulness, and demanding work. All of which have come into play during my Board and Batten journey.
Daily exercise and eating healthy have been important to me but it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with thyroid disease in 2004 that I began to pay attention to skincare ingredients. I learned that so much of what we put on our bodies is absorbed and can lead to hair loss, headaches, hormone imbalance and who knows what other long-term effects. After my first soap making class, I was completely hooked. Who knew that plant oils, which originate from seeds, leaves, and flowers, contained such nourishing vitamins and antioxidants? This makes them nature’s best kept secret to skin care and wellness! My desire to learn more and more led me to both aromatherapy and plant based nutrition certifications.
Board and Batten is truly a labor of love and a collaboration of creativity with my four children and four sisters. Every product has a story behind it involving creative minds mixed with many hours of research. Knowing I will always get an honest answer, they are Board and Batten’s official product testers, name refiners, and scent smellers. We name each product to reflect our fun, relaxed philosophy toward clean living.
My hope is to guide people in their organic skin care choices while encouraging daily habits of a plant based diet, fitness, and stress management. So, while I still enjoy the outdoors and animals here at the farm, nothing pleases me more than to hear from a customer who has made a positive change with their daily wellness ritual!
